What is Alzheimer’s?

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that leads to memory loss, cognitive decline, and behavioral changes. It is the most common form of dementia and primarily affects older adults. The condition occurs when abnormal deposits of proteins in the brain—such as beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles—disrupt communication between nerve cells and cause them to die. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s, treatments and support can help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a general term used to describe a decline in cognitive function severe enough to interfere with daily life and activities. It is not a specific disease but rather a group of symptoms associated with memory loss, impaired thinking, and difficulty with communication, problem-solving, or decision-making. Dementia typically results from damage to brain cells, which affects their ability to communicate effectively.

What is the Difference Between Alzheimer’s and Dementia?

Dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are closely related but distinct concepts. Dementia is a general term that describes a range of symptoms affecting memory, thinking, communication, and the ability to perform everyday tasks. It is not a specific disease but rather a symptom of underlying conditions, which can include Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, or frontotemporal disorders. Alzheimer’s disease, on the other hand, is a specific and the most common cause of dementia, accounting for 60–80% of cases. It is a progressive brain disorder caused by abnormal protein deposits, such as beta-amyloid plaques and tau tangles, which disrupt brain cell communication and lead to cell death. While dementia symptoms vary based on the cause, Alzheimer’s typically begins with memory loss and confusion, gradually advancing to severe cognitive and physical impairments. Dementia’s progression depends on its underlying cause, and in some cases—like those due to vitamin deficiencies—it may be reversible. Alzheimer’s, however, is irreversible and progresses in clearly defined stages. Treatments for both focus on managing symptoms, but the approach differs based on the diagnosis. In essence, dementia is an umbrella term, and Alzheimer’s is a specific disease that falls under it.
